*** out of 5 Basically this is Ray Harryhausen trying to remake King Kong again, with a Venusian alien instead of Mighty Joe Young, which is much superior film to this. The effects are remarkably well-integrated, and the creature is perhaps the best actor in the film. It doesn't quite achieve the sympathetic performance that Mighty Joe did (and certainly doesn't match King Kong in that regard), but is an admirable effort by Harryhausen nonetheless. Still a fun film, and worth a view, despite some off-putting elements that were regrettably common for the time, such as the awfully cliche ethnic stereotypes and the belittling way in which the leading man's character treats Joan Taylor's character for much of the film.
